India’s current market size for tailoring and alteration is pegged at an approximate $9.2 billion and is growing at a steady 7.5 per cent annually. However, this fragmented industry has several gaps. While on one hand customers struggle with unsatisfactory fitting/stitching, unpredictable delivery times and lack of customization; on the other, irregular demand-supply restricts local tailors from expansion thereby leading to low, unpredictable incomes.
To address this massive gap, Vasudevan T, Ashish Singhal and Lavanya Venkatraman founded Bengaluru-based Urban Tailor, an e-tailoring service that utilizes robust technology to seamlessly manage orders, end-to-end. Urban Tailor aggregates a network of local, small tailoring units who fulfil the growing demand generation and are thus, assured of a predictable income flow.
Urban Tailor has incorporated a hassle-free, 3-step process. Once a customer chooses the style and pattern for a salwar/kameez, kurta or blouse and places an order online, the pick-up service collects the fabric and a measurement garment from the customer’s doorstep. In the next step, customization requirements, if any, are confirmed with the customer over the phone and the package is sent for tailoring. Finally, the stitched product is delivered to the customer within 10 days. Currently, the price range starts at INR 400 and Urban Tailor also undertakes alteration, at no extra cost.
With Urban Tailor taking the lead on customer acquisition, allocation, pick-up and delivery of orders as well as capacity building; tailors completely focus on their skill and on delivering a quality end product. Started in March 2015 and working with a base of 70+ tailors, Urban Tailor’s well-differentiated strategy has ensured an increasing customer base for tailors; it has over 20,000 customers recording a 40 per cent growth month-on-month with nearly 52 per cent repeat customers.
Urban Tailor aims to expand to 20 cities by 2019.
